Later this year my husband and I are going to Italy for a vacation. This vacation is partly to attend Milan Frocktails, a sewing gala, and partly to visit Florence and Onano, the city of my Italian husband’s family. The idea of Italy and fashion has without a doubt had me looking through photos of Dolce and Gabbana fashion collections. I recently came upon some of these images above. I instantly thought about a sewing pattern I owned, McCall’s 8005, and how I could use it to create my own version of the D&G patchwork skirt. The pattern features an 8 gore skirt, what could be more perfect?!
This sewing project was a “fabric scrap buster”. I feel like this skirt is like a scrapbook because it’s made up of fabrics from past sewing projects, many of which are associated with good memories. Just for example, the rose gold brocade was used in my Dressmaker’s Ball 2024 dress, the Peacock fabric was bought at Liberty of London, with intention to make our bedroom styled after the Palmer House Hilton of Chicago. The Rococo cat fabric was bought at a small local fabric store in Charlottesville, VA on a birthday trip. I could go on and on.
While I am not typically a “patchwork” kinda gal, I think the skirt has a fabulously eccentric and European flair to it as it turned out! The fabrics all kind of work off each other (and it was a very organic process picking what to use). I will enjoy styling this skirt for spring and summer! I look forward to wearing it out to dinner in Florence!
