I am a self proclaimed “ambassador of sewing” for many reasons, but one of the top reasons is that if you can sew, you can make yourself just about anything you want, including fashion pieces you would not otherwise pay for. My case in point, is the “Tuskara Oversized Shearling Jacket” by LoveShackFancy, retailing (when it’s not sold out) for $3995! You can see it here.
I came upon a photo of this coat, and instantly loved it! It has a glorious 1970’s vibe, the pink velour color was perfect for my “deep autumn” color season palette, and the creamy soft texture of the shearling was enticingly cozy looking. The cuffs and fur pockets were top notch! I just adored this feminine coat. I did not like the boxy oversized cut of it, but I saved the photo of it for future sewing inspiration.
A few weeks later, I was in “Ollie’s Outlet” with my husband, when inspiration suddenly hit me! Yes, in the most surprising place, there was my perfect fabric for my “dream” LoveShackFancy coat! Not only was the velour the exact perfect shade of pink, but it was even quilted with a lovely floral motif and under $20. Perfect.

I chose to use a Butterick Sewing pattern, B6720. This pattern presented to me fitted silhouette I prefer to the boxy cut of the original LoveShackFancy coat. For the fur contrast which I feel is the “star of the show”, I ordered this faux shearling from etsy.

The belt shown here, is a custom creation. I had originally followed the sewing pattern, creating a tie belt. However the fabric was too thick and the belt was looking too stiff for my liking. I ended up taking a belt I owned and seam ripping it apart for the hardware. I then sewed my belt in, and ta da! A cute coat belt. I added thin belt loops of braided embroidery thread to the two sides so the belt can stay attached even when hanging in the closet. It makes it much easier for me to put on when the belt is already secure on the coat.
Here is a short video of the coat in action:
