I want to share my experience of recently sewing two outfits for babies from Simplicity sewing pattern 1447. This pattern is classified “easy-to-sew” and I believe that is a true statement, as long as you have a decent understanding of sewing, elastic installation, and zipper installation. The sewing pattern includes options for a baby girl dress in different lengths, with or without sleeves. It also includes patterns for matching pants to cover a diaper, and a tie on sunhat. For baby boys it offers a jumpsuit with or without sleeves, and in different lengths. A baseball cap pattern is also included for the boys.
For the baby girl outfit I chose to create view F and hat G, with pants D. I made this in a size for roughly a 1 year old. For the baby boy outfit, I chose to sew view C, and hat H. I chose to not use the pockets because the pattern would have been too busy. The boy outfit was made for a newborn size.
Both of these outfits were similar in that they have pleats in the center front, they both have a back zipper, and they both finish off the neck and the sleeves by using single fold bias tape. The boy outfit used snaps along the crotch area to make it easier for diaper changing.
Overall I found this pattern to be quite self explanatory, and easy to follow. I recommend sewing the hat entirely by hand first, before sewing it on the machine, just because I found it gave me more control in constructing it.
For both of these outfits I used fabric purchased from Spoonflower.
If you are looking for an easy pattern that will allow you to make both boy and girl outfits and two types of hats, this may be an excellent pattern to take a look at. I was happy I was able to use the same pattern to make so many different items.
