A few months ago I went to a salon and asked for my hair to be cut into face framing layers. Sadly, this hair stylist lady said she would not do it because my hair is so fine. So I just got it trimmed that day, but I still wished for layers. I know my hair is fine, but I have had layers in the past and I felt it made my hair look fuller!
I am not the only person who feels this way. Here are three articles about the merits of layers in fine hair:
The “Butterfly Haircut” Is a Game Changer For My Fine Hair
Here is a photo of the author of that article, her before and after photos. I think it looks fantastic! Look at all the body it gave her. This convinced me I was onto something!

Ok, so at this point I was thinking ” I think the hair stylist is wrong, I still want layers!”
Fast forward to last week, I came across the viral Butterfly cut by professional hairdresser, Brad Mondo. I am about 10 months behind the viral-ness of this haircut trend, but the knowledge that this method is possible for me to DIY came at a perfect time. I was on an unexpected extra long layover in DCA. I can’t carry scissors with me per TSA, but I knew I had enough time on my hands to walk to a store on my layover and buy some scissors to do the job. I purposely didn’t want expensive ones, as I would just have to leave them behind. I found a pair at the store Five Below for $2.50! Perfect!
Before I attempted the haircut on myself, I watched close to 30 videos of other gals try out the DIY method. To my surprise, all of them turned out very nice and even consistently! Having this insight, I got my nerve up to try it. Essentially half of your hair from the apex forward is tied smooth and tight between your eyebrows. The back of your hair is pulled smooth and tight into a high ponytail. Then you cut off a fair amount in the front, and the same amount in the back. Take it down, and voila! A very nice layered cut! I was pleasantly surprised!
Here is my hair with a little bit of curl in it after the butterfly haircut. I really like it! This could not have been easier!
Since I do have super fine hair, I will continue to do all I can to protect it, since it’s thinned out at the bottom from this layered cut. But I am happy with it, and I can’t believe I was able to do it myself. This was exactly the face framing layer look I wanted to achieve. Have you ever tried this? DO you think you might? Let me know!
